anspach center
replacement new construction and conversion of a multipurpose project
Due to years of vacancy, the former "Galeries Anspach" shopping arcades (dating back to 1898) were in urgent need of renovation. The Anspach Center will provide the building with a new, multi-functional future. Besides 23 apartments, this building houses a casino, a restaurant with panoramic views, a hotel, and a shopping arcade. VK provided the stability studies for this this complicated reconversion.
Part of the facade was to be retained, while the remainder of the buildings were completely torn down. Moreover, the foundations of the new construction were to be placed underneath the existing facade foundations. The facades that were to be preserved were structurally shored up, while closely monitoring any horizontal movements. If necessary the structural support could be corrected by moving excessive weight along the facade. The roof structure of the Casino also provided the necessary challenges. With a span of 23 meters, the girders had to uphold both the roof, utility areas, and the technical grid above the show room. Because the girders exceeded the crane capacity, they were partly pre-welded and partially bolted together on the spot. During the positioning temporary reinforcements, or wind bracing, affixed to the concrete cores.
