belmont court
renovation of office buildings
Belmont Court is comprised of a row of office buildings and a large courtyard. The building site dates from the 1960s, and is home to the Ministry of Labour. The office space was very dated, but the property developer was not interested in have the building replaced. There were many advantages to simply renovating the building: the quality of the facing brick, the vast square footage, the speed with which the desired result could be achieved, ecological and economic advantages, the minimal depth of the building and the exceptional ceiling height. Everything somewhat salvageable remained. The building owner simply wanted “the building brought into the 21st century, without threatening its historical architectural value”.
VK was responsible for the special competencies during the renovation. The exceptional ceiling height throughout the building allowed false ceilings to be integrated into the design without significant reduction in the total volume of the site.
An artist was commissioned to produce special plastic windows, giving the building a colourful accent. The use of primary colours both inside and outside, give the building a modern feel. They blend well with the daylight, and bring the building to life at night. The courtyard, formerly a desolate area, is now home to a series of trees planted to form a pleasing rhythmic design. It provides an oasis of serenity offering a stark contrast to the constant stream of traffic travelling past the site.
