city hall kortrijk

transform a bank into a City Hall

The purchase of a former bank building from the 1960s gave the city of Kortrijk the chance to group all of its administrative departments into on building. The building is part of the same complex as Kortrijk’s historical City Hall. This allowed for the addition of a direct connection between the administrative areas and the ceremonial areas. VK was responsible for the stability study for this renovation.

The base of the building contains a large main hall on the main floor, 2 levels of underground parking, and supports 4 upper levels. The main hall was designed to house the public services, and has the look and feel of a covered market. The area on the main floor was stripped back to bare concrete, and has allowed the creation of a large and austere open plan design. The addition of curtains provides an acoustic and visual buffer, while the use of glass and polycarbonate elements creates discrete consultation areas. Skylights in the roof allow ample sunlight to flood the building.

The upper levels house the administrative departments and a few meeting rooms. Civil servants can enjoy the beautiful views of the city from the rooftop patio during their breaks.
