city hall menen
renovation of the City Hall
The City Hall of Menen is a listed building of historical value whose location, between two squares, gives it a strong presence. The building complex joins the buildings using various styles: the City Hall with penitentiary and patio dating from the 18th century, a commissioner and secretary’s house from the 19th century, 20th century additions, and a row of 5 houses with a bell tower.
The renovation restored the structure of the historic elements of the building by replacing the wood floors with a new flooring system. Then, all additions made to the complex in the 20th century were stripped away. Finally, two new structures were added to increase the functionality of the complex. VK was responsible for the stability studies.
The first structure, a glass and steel construction, has stairways and galleries made with prefabricated concrete. These elements combine to join the City Hall with the commissioner’s house, and enclose part of the interior space. The space was partially retained, and is illuminated with large lamps.
The second structure covers the patio, now the new main entrance of the City Hall. The new council chamber lies above this structure. The floor section of the chamber rests upon 2 crossed beams in a beam on beam system supported by 4 columns. This allowed an opening to be made in the floor section which allows daylight to shine down into the main entrance.
