"De Zaat" is part of an ambitious plan to revalue the grounds of a former shipyard. The disappearance of the Boelwerf [famous Belgian shipyard] was accompanied by social unrest because of major job losses, and left a great void in the municipality of Temse. The revaluation project with business sites, single-family houses and apartments, is to fill the void. In an initial phase three blocks were constructed that were named after ships that had previously been built at the shipyard: Amurgo, Alcedo and Arcadia. VK was responsible for the engineering work.

The buildings have 114 apartments and 4 penthouses. The shops are located on the ground floor. All apartments are equipped with a high quality, self-regulating climate system. Moreover, a balanced ventilation system with heat recovery provides quality indoor air. Fans bring air in and out through the roof by way of ventilation ducts, in order not to disturb the architecture of the glass facades. In addition, the used air is being removed via the humid chambers. Fresh air is drawn into the living rooms, and heated by means of heat recuperation with the suctioned out air. Therefore, there is no need to pre-heat the main equipment, and ventilation losses are limited to a minimum.
