egmont II
expansion of offices
In the style of The Egmont I, headquarters to the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Cooperative Development, an extension was added for use by the same occupants. 9 levels, 4 of which are underground were erected around 2 patios. VK carried out the stability study for this project.
Most of the floor space is occupied by offices, and one of the largest conference halls in Europe (442 seats) is located in the underground levels of the building. The entire width of the hall is spanned by a ceiling resting on self supporting outer walls. The structure was constructed primarily using reinforced concrete and pre-tensioned floor panels supported by columns.
This project required a special foundation. The entire building is supported by slabs of reinforced concrete poured over a layer of sand. The levels below ground were built up against an existing slurry wall. The rest of the foundation is supported on the side by a wall of adjacent concrete pillars finished and sealed off with gunited concrete (shotcrete). This force applied concrete application is created using a high pressure mix of dry concrete and water, and stays in the position in which it has been applied.
