hotel relais ravestein
renovation and transformation historic building into hotel
In 2004, Hotel Relais Ravestein opened its doors as the first four star hotel in Bruges. The hotel was built in a historic building, popularly called the Ravestein Court. Ravestein court dates back to the 15th century, and was visited by, among others Mary of Burgundy and Maximilian of Austria. The present building dates back to the 18th century and was thoroughly renovated in order to provide the necessary hotel services, however while paying great attention to its historical context.
VK took care of the structural engineering of this prestigious renovation project. The entire building was stripped, and the floors were replaced by a high-quality light weight flooring system, responding to all acoustic demands of a four star hotel. Sagging old oak cross beams or tie beams were restored using a unique repair method developed by VK. Normally speaking, such beams are covered, replaced or profiled. In the Ravenstein Hotel, steel pins were drilled vertically into the tie beam. After which, epoxy mortar was poured on up until the upper side of the secondary beams, which are resting on the supporting beam, creating a heightened hybrid beam most firm where it sags most. That is because most of the epoxy mortar collects there.
The hotel has 16 suites, 2 meeting rooms, a restaurant with 70 seats and a terrace seating 55.
