square congress centre

renovation of congress centre

The former "Brussels Palace of Congress" was built on the occasion of the World Fair of 1958. The building is located partly under the Mont des Arts and houses authentic mural paintings by Magritte, and Delvaux. When it became necessary to remove asbestos from the old Palace of Congress, it was decided to renovate the entire building. VK was commissioned to take care of the structural engineering.

Firstly, the congress centre will be given increased visibility through a large glass cube that serves as an entrance. The steps, leading down to the glazed entrance hall can also be used as an auditorium during outdoor concerts, festivities and film showings.

Secondly, the congress centre was modernised, with special focus on multimedia, environmental protection and safety. The capacity of the halls was doubled, from auditoriums to numerous modular rooms. There is a multi-purpose hall of 6 meters high and 4,000 that can be used for events and exhibitions. Further, a panoramic hall boasts spectacular views across the beautiful capital of Belgium.

Square also wishes to contribute to the dynamics of the Mont des Arts-quarter in the form of a new restaurant and bar that will be open to the public. There is also a direct connection with the nearby Bozar Centre for Fine Arts. The MIPIM Special Jury Award leaves no doubt: Square puts Brussels on the map as a convention city.
