restoration university library

The university library of the University of Ghent, of Henry van de Velde, dates back to 1939. The monument is in urgent need of restoration, whereby VK is responsible for custom engineering work.

Most of the books are kept in a tower with 20 levels. An optimal indoor climate must be created for the many valuable and unique books and manuscripts, without causing a high energy demand. As an annual average, a relative humidity of 50% and a temperature between 15 and 25 ° C applies for books. Variations on this are divided into five categories (from AA to D), from "no risk" to "risky". For the university library Class A will be maintained 98% and Class B 100% of the time. That means a maximum deviation of 10% relative humidity, and a seasonal adjustment of up to 10°C. A central air treatment group at level 20 of the book tower provides fresh air to all levels. The temperature and humidity can be precisely controlled by floor with a local air conditioning unit.

For the other premises (reading room, magazine room, manuscript room, storage depots, ...) classes were determined also. In these areas, capacity utilization and glare reduction will be taken more account of.

The energy demand can be reduced by way of passive interventions, such as thermal insulation, improved air tightness, and outdoor awnings. In addition, plants will actively reduce energy demand: heat recovery groups, demand-controlled ventilation, free cooling, rainwater recycling, ...

The book transport will occur using a new advanced transport system. A transport container with a load-bearing capacity of 30 kg, covers the entire distance in 35 seconds. Each floor has an automatic import and export system with an ability to accumulate. The total capacity is 115 containers per hour.
