assisted housing ostend
new construction of assisted living facilities
VK is designing 35 assisted living residences in the urban centre for the OCMW (Public Centre for Social Welfare) Oostende. The site is a small and irregular space in the centre of the city. It overlooks 2 converging streets. The assisted living residences will be distributed over 2 volumes, one in each street. A semipublic garden will link the two parts of the structure, as will a public plateau on the first floor. That area will contain a common living area with a cafeteria. Huge windows will maximally enlarge the public zone visually. The plateau will function as a meeting place for a wide range of activities. The garden, on the other hand, will be a place of calm and quiet.
Despite the 6 structural layers, the design is intended to feel small-scale. The myriad siding materials and transparent façade components obscure the massiveness of the structural volumes. At the same time, VK aims to create unity at the chosen site by way of the architecture, form and ambience of the building and modernisation programme. The buildings will be integrated into their environment, and make a qualitative contribution to the existing street scene.
