erasmus hospital

extension and renovation of a university hospital

In 2006 and 2007, the ULB (Free University of Brussels) created a master plan for the Erasmus Hospital. Firstly, a renovation would upgrade large parts of the hospital. Secondly, a connection needed to be provided to a hospital that still needed be built on the same campus, the Jules Bordet Institute. Prior to this, an architectural design competition was organised. Winner VK - Ma2 - Hoet + Minne evaluated the master plan and sought a way to maximise positive impact while minimising cost.

A new building will connect the existing hospital with the future Jules Bordet Institute, while bridging the difference of level between hospital and day hospital. The biomedical engineering unit will be extended over 5 floors to include nuclear medicine, 6 extra operating rooms, radiology, endoscopy and emergency services. As a result of the extension, the clean and dirty linen can be divided between separate corridors. A vertical circulation route was designed to improve the transportation of patients and goods. The additional space can also serve as a buffer during the renovation.

Because a number of existing departments are also being renovated, such as the outpatient cardiovascular department, the entire operating rooms area, radiology and part of the emergency unit. In addition, 7 of 36 nursing units will be renovated, eventually reducing the number of patients and resulting in larger rooms and more comfort. Furthermore, additional corridors and lifts will solve some of the acute problems in the vertical and horizontal circulation for visitors, patients and goods. The logistics level (-2), with pharmacy, kitchens, storage rooms and mortuary, will also be completely renovated.
