new development home for developmentally disabled non-working adults

VK designed this home for developmentally disabled non-working adults as a small housing cluster. It consists of two connected houses each for 5 to 6 people, one apartment for 4 people and a small unit for studio living (2 x 2 people).

Each of these forms of housing will act independently and be given its own area in the home with a private entrance, courtyard garden, and back door. Large window surfaces give the social spaces in the residential volumes an optimum relationship with the green outdoor environment. A long corridor with all the community facilities links the various blocks, which run at right angles to this backbone.

The low height of the buildings and the different blocks ensures a small scale feel. This is continued in the connecting corridor: the perpendicular living units break the monotony and create different views of the surrounding area. This contrasts with the massive appearance of the long connecting element on the outside. The cladding reinforces this difference: brick for the rear façade, wood for the living volumes.
