replacement structure and renovation of a care facility
The present facility is located in the centre of Ieper, enclosed by streets and a limited amount of terrain. The premises include serviced flats, a daycare centre and a nursing home. Because of a number of deficiencies in the present residence, it is being for the most part replaced by a new structure. The limited area results in a design with 5 structural levels. The other structures on the premises are being thoroughly renovated.
The present residence consists of a mix of consecutive renovations and expansions. The design of VK is reorganising this into a residence with a focus on functionality and utilisation. The accent will lie on small-scale normalised living, with more emphasis on the residential and lifestyle aspect than on the service one. The first, second and third floors each comprise 3 care units, with each level also providing a separate, closeable living group for people whose dementia leads to disruptive behaviour. All the rooms can be adapted to the nursing requirements of the residents. With the emphasis on living quality, the design will also stimulate a personal organisation of each room. Also planned are 2 to 3 ‘nursing stations’ per floor, where nursing personnel can confer and residents can receive visiting family. The envisaged living areas have an adapted kitchen with home appliances, an inviting seating corner and a dining and activity area.
The first floor will also include a separate occupational and physiotherapy room. A large, multifunctional social area will be located on the ground floor.
