louise serviced flats
new construction serviced flats
The client, Rust- en Verzorgingstehuis Sint-Jozef, delineated a number of boundary conditions for the new construction of the serviced flat block Louise. The design by VK was to be built on the corner of the site adjacent to an executive residence that is part of the local architectural heritage. Additionally, a passageway above the emergency fire escape will connect the building of serviced flats to the residence.
The borders of the property, formed by a street and a cycle path, for the most part determined the floor plan. It consists of 2 building parts the back part of which links diagonally to the front part of the structure and faces the residential and nursing home. The land that is enclosed in this way has been landscaped as a courtyard garden. The layout of the residence creates a veritable palette of features. For example, there is diversity in orientation and views: the south side faces the street and the side faces north. The layout of the flats also varies: the corner apartments are somewhat larger, and a number of flats have an extra bedroom.
The materials used in construction, such as the grey hand-moulded brick and the black roof slates create unity with the rest of the location. They also lend the serviced flats a contemporary character. Other elements, as well, create harmony between the residence and the executive residence. For example, the height of the eaves of the executive residence is also carried over. The protruding façade elements echo the face of the residence.
