master plan and new development admissions unit

During a changeover in the mental health care system in the early 1990s, the psychiatric centre was allocated 30 acute care beds. This caused the bed configuration to require a thorough makeover as well as the provision of additional treatment rooms and an outpatient clinic. VK redesigned its master plan, and was responsible for the design of the new department.

The new admissions unit “Waag” was built on the site of the old therapy building, which was rebuilt elsewhere on the campus. The 30 beds are divided into 4 age groups, which are vertically situated around two atria. The central nursing station is fit in between the 2 atria, and the ground floor and first floor of the living groups. With this design, VK avoided long halls, and the staff has an excellent overview of the 4 age groups. The two atria are covered with a light dome, allowing plenty of natural light to enter.

The difference in height of 4 metres on the site was counterbalanced with a separation between staff and resident areas Living groups and visitors’ areas were realised at the front. At the back and 4 metres below are the offices, warehouses and technical areas for staff.

In a subsequent phase, the adjacent monastery was renovated and replaced by a new building with kitchen, day hospital and administrative offices.
