VK has already been working for Sint Amandus for many years (totalling over 300 beds) and assisted the management with the master plan.

For geriatric psychiatric patients, VK designed a new pavilion. Because of the high level of care required by the patients, the building only has a ground-floor with 26 rooms. Each with a sanitary unit which is adapted to the type of patient: 10 rooms for mobile patients, 11 rooms for wheelchair users and 5 rooms with bed frames and oxygen equipment. The rooms are grouped around 2 courtyards, surrounded by a walkway with fully glazed exterior. In addition there are staff rooms, nursing stations, treatment rooms, living rooms and a cafeteria.

A new department for behaviourally disturbed and/or aggressive patients emphasises maximum security. This requires specific measures such as a security perimeter and closed outdoor space. Additionally, all points in the building must be easily and quickly accessible from the central nursing station. The general functions are also centrally, located outside the living area. The department for behaviourally disturbed and/or aggressive patients has 16 patients in two age groups, which are located at right angles to each other. The pavilion is connected to the nearby buildings, so that staff can get fast support.

A new inpatient section is located in the green surroundings, for a therapeutic effect. The relationship with the green is accented by large window surfaces and a promenade that crosses through the building. The upper floor containing the night rooms have a more closed character. The 3 sub departments (closed admission and short treatment, open admission and medium treatment, and closed admission and long treatment) are duplexes conceived as: living areas on the ground floor and waiting areas and night rooms above them.
