sint-vincentius nursing home
new construction and expansion of a nursing home
The existing centre has 2 floors and consists of 3 volumes. Built in 1990 and extended in 1997 and 2000, today it no longer meets the social requirements. Moreover, the kitchen does not meet HACCP standards.
A major renovation and expansion of the nursing home has therefore been planned. VK will convert all double rooms into single rooms and widen the cramped single rooms. The living groups will be reorganised into six smaller units. The rooms are divided into a day and night time area by wall units. Large windows provide maximum outside views and abundant natural light. For couples, two rooms can be joined together by a moveable partition, by group of 14 to 19 rooms. In order to retain capacity during this expansion, an extension will be necessary: before the renovations start, new single rooms will be built. The ground floor will house the community facilities and the department for people suffering from dementia. The latter is closed, but connected to an inner courtyard via a hallway.
A day care centre and centre for short stays are new additions to the site. Finally, the kitchen is also being expanded. Since the care centre will remain in use during construction, while maintaining its total capacity, a sophisticated phasing plan was developed.
