reconstruction city gate antwerp south - tunnel under the courthouse - construction of square Bolivar

At the southern entrance to the city of Antwerp, where the new courthouse was erected, the TV RRP, together with VK and Arup, also designed a plan for the linking of the city. At this former city gate, the Amerikalei, one of the central boulevards in Antwerp, now connects to the busy E17. The same Amerikalei also flows out aboveground into the Bolivarplaats, where the courthouse forms thus a physical gate between the city and the national road infrastructure.

The designers from Arup, VK and RRP were responsible for the underground tunnelling of the courthouse and the entire construction of the infrastructure around the iconic building. The underground tunnel connects thus to the E17 at the Amerikalei.

Besides this, it was the explicit wish of the architects, Richard Rogers as the head, that the Bolivarplaats be given a clearly defined public function through the integration of a tram connection in the planning. The tram now has a fixed halting place at the courthouse and is a symbol of the accessibility of the judicial services in the city. The entire southern district is, in part thanks to these modifications, once again a lively neighbourhood with scores of small restaurants and cafe businesses and inhabitants.

All of these factors contribute to the perfect integration of the courthouse in the urban environmental fabric and the infrastructural context.
