hazardous traffic junctions west-flanders

redesigning several hazardous traffic junctions

The temporary partnership "Road Safety Flanders" (TV 3V) has been assigned to "get rid of the dangerous spots and stretches of road in Flanders". On the regional roads in Flanders 800 dangerous spots have to be gotten rid of. The Flemish Government will provide 100 million euros for this. The temporary partnership between Duynslaeger, Lobelle, SCES and VK is answerable for all of the blackspots in West Flanders selected by TV 3V and they have been since the project began in 2003. More than 100 projects have already been carried out, under a race against the clock in the design and implementation phase. VK’s study team was responsible for the design of at least 20 projects.

TV 3V is directed by a steering committee in which the following are seated: the commissioning party AWV, together with the 5 Flemish Governors and a number of authorised bodies. Additionally, the 3 important associations in this steering committee are: the Parents of Accident Casualty Children, the Pedestrian Movement and the Cyclists’ Association. This is a road safety programme by the Flemish Government aimed at reducing the number of traffic accident casualties.

The challenge existed primarily in the realisation of the project in close cooperation with the different city administrations and police. The projects concerned spread across the entire province, the most noticeable being the tunnel N43 - N36 in Harelbeke and the redesign of the crossroads at the Expressweg-Gentseweg in Waregem.
