square kraaiennest

construction of central village square

For the construction of this square a thorough pre-study took place (Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co. and Leon Krier). VK handled the infrastructure studies and the execution thereof. The designers opted for a central square, open and complimented by 1 big tree. In the area surrounding the Kraaiennestplein there are buildings designed to fit in stylistically with the traditional, local building style and are only permitted if they resemble the pre-20th century building style.

The style and the square furnishings, in the form of elongated beams in white concrete, are an abstraction of jetties in a marina, a reference to the name extension related to the names of the streets: gangplank, port, starboard, nave, wheel house …

The beams will be used to sit, lie, play on, but also form physical protection between the square and the adjoining main road. The square area under the central, big linden tree is raised by 30 cm through means of stairs, in the direction of the social house through means of drainage slopes. The planting of the big winter linden tree in the square but also the planting of European white elms and the ash-wood provide additional greenery. Small water fountains give a fairy-like finish.
