traffic junction N43-N36 harelbeke

redesign of crossroads by building a tunnel

This job took place within the framework of a broad plan for getting rid of dangerous traffic spots in Flanders. This specific plan concerned the adaptation of the crossroads between the N36 (Roeselare - Deerlijk) and the N43 (Kortrijk - Gent), through the construction of a tunnel and a separate cycling lane underground.

The total of 210 working days required for construction was very ambitious and was respected with verve. The work roughly amounted to the breaking up of the existing road surface, the transport of dry soil, the construction of a watertight tub through means of sheet piles, the construction of a tunnel and accompanying access slopes for cyclists. The installation of a sewage system and different hard surfaces were part of the programme. The construction method used consisted of the excavation of a big trench relaying the crossway direction of the road (N43) across the N36, to serve as a bridge. This is the principle of the open tunnel construction. Drilling was not used in this. The big advantage is the fast pace of the work.

The closeness of the Leie River and the soil structure demanded a very high standard of execution. More than 12.400m³ of concrete was used for the tunnel and about 3.500m³ for the cycle tunnels. In the middle of the tunnel there are concrete slabs 1,2 metres thick, to prevent any rising. The slabs are reinforced with 1.500.000 kg of steel. The textured formwork in the upright walls creates a playful element.
