vk engineer for new prisons
In recent years, it has been a regular item in the news: Belgian prisons are overpopulated and there is an urgent need for more cells. Studies imply an overpopulation of 17% and the need for some 2.500 extra cells. The Buildings Agency has organised several competitions for new prisons, in order to meet the demand. It concerns DBFM (Design - Build - Finance - Manage)-projects, where a construction team not only takes charge of the studies and the realisation of the project, but also finances it and keeps it in good repair. VK submitted it's candidacy for the prisons of Beveren, Dendermonde, Leuze-en-Hainaut and Marche-en-Famenne, and won the first two in the team BAM-PPP.
The Beveren prison will have 300 places on 29.000 sqm, while the Dendermonde prison will offer 444 places on 31.500 m². Works will begin in October 2011 and the prisons are to be completed in July 2013.
