vk studio-dwp winner of a competition for a pediatric hospital in vietnam

The temporary association VK STUDIO-dwp has been proclaimed winner of an international architecture competition for a new pediatric hospital in Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam). The construction of this hospital is an initiative of the VinaCapital Foundation and fits in a larger whole of charity projects, with mainly American organisations participating. This project is to integrate international standards, with respect for the Vietnamese cultural and medical traditions.

The project will count 200 beds, divided into separate bed blocks that float above the landscape. The bed wings are lifted by columns and enjoy wonderful views on the surrounding landscape. This creates a transparent entity and maximizes the daylight. Also, this composition considerably facilitates the orientation within the building. The underground floor gets natural light through sunken gardens and patio's.

Through relational diagrams and bubble schemes, the design team created a functional and flexible design, using an adaptable grid. The project also focuses on the development of a 'green' hospital, with amongst others, solar panels, natural ventilation, solar protection, reuse of rainwater and green roofs.
