Construction open day energy-friendly swimming pool Poperinge draws a crowd
The new sports and recreational swimming pool of Poperinge town attracts a lot of attention. An open day of the construction site of this energy-friendly swimming pool, where VK Architects & Engineers took care of the complete engineering studies, received over 1,700 visitors.
In 2011, the town of Poperinge organized a competition for a new sustainable swimming pool. Four years later, the project designed by LD-architecten in a Design & Build-formula with Furnibo, gradually shapes up. An open day of the construction site attracted over 1,700 visitors. Mostly thanks to the efforts of the town of Poperinge: it posts news and pictures on Facebook as regular as clockwork.
The new swimming pool can not only count on local interest. The northern French press also dedicated an article on the ambitious project. Which is good news for the town of Poperinge, hoping for 250,000 to 275,000 visitors annually, in a perimeter of 30 kilometers. Visitors will have at their disposal a learner’s pool with moving pool floor up to 3 meters for divers and seniors, a sports pool with six 25 meter lanes, a recreational pool with whirlpool and massage tubs and a 58 meter long slide, a pool with wave machine with rapids, a toddlers pool and wellness area with sauna.
Energy-friendly swimming pool
VK studied a large number of active and passive measures to strongly reduce the energy costs, always a large expense for swimming pools. A highly efficient insulated outer shell in high-quality concrete and triple insulating glazing ensures excellent airtightness. In addition, cogeneration, heat recuperation (from the swimming pool air, amongst others) and energy efficient lighting with motion detection and daylight sensors are some of the measures that sharply reduce energy demand. Rainwater is used to its maximum, as drinking water after filtering and as rinse water. Up to 70% of the latter will be reused. These and other measures reduce the exploitation costs by half, compared to a standard swimming pool.
The largest construction project ever for Poperinge town will be completed by July 2016, just in time for splashing fun during the summer months.
