National and international acclaim for VK-projects
The past weeks and months a few projects were highly acclaimed, for which VK took charge of the engineering part.
Blue Tower: finalist at the CTBUH Awards
Firstly, the Blue Tower or Police Tower in Charleroi (Belgium) was highly commended at the CTBUH Awards (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat). The design by Jean Nouvel and MDW Architecture was proclaimed as one of four finalists for Best Tall Buildings Europe. So this striking new landmark at the Charleroi skyline is also receiving international acclaim. VK designed the structural engineering for the project which set a nice challenge for our structural engineers: the tower evolves from an elliptical shape on the ground floor to a circle at the top. Moreover, the tower becomes more narrow towards the top, resulting in different measures for each individual floor. Nevertheless, VK pleaded for prefabrication because of the varying tolerance and required precision. It also was the most simple, swift and cost-effective solution.
Hofheide Crematorium: 2015 Prize for Architecture Flemish Brabant
The Hofheide Crematorium gives us architecture of a different order: monumental in its sacredness and solace. This design by Coussée & Goris and RCR Arquitectes won the 2015 Prize for Architecture of the province Flemish Brabant. VK was responsible for the buildings services and sustainable design. The integrated design approach led to a low-tech building, with intelligent installations as a logical result of the architectural design. A thorough life cycle analysis and passive measures contribute to a project with a respect for the environment and its surroundings. In this sober, quiet and consoling architecture, our engineers ensured that the building services were integrated in all discretion.
SCIA User Contest
Finally, VK received an honorary mention with 2 projects in the SCIA User Contest. This bi-yearly competition attracts attention to the performances of users of the SCIA and Allplan software. It’s an opportunity to show your technical skills and knowhow. Both VK submissions were nominated for their respective categories. In the category “Buildings”, VK secured a top 3 spot with the TBR tower. For this project, SCIA Engineer was applied for various thorough analysis. In the category “Industrial Buildings & Plants”, the Euro-Silo project was also highly praised. Our engineers used SCIA Engineer to design the expansion of the industrial site: 16 vertical silo’s, amounting up to a total of 750 tons of steel and 20,000 m³ of concrete.
