Sint-Maarten Hospital wins IFHE International Building Award

About

VK architects+engineers is very proud that AZ Sint-Maarten has won the IFHE2020 International Building Award! It is extremely rewarding that this professional federation for healthcare design acknowledges the conceptual and design features of this future-proof, patient centred hospital.

The healing character of the building is formed by fresh air, plenty of daylight, well-considered use of colour, view of green roofs and contact with the green surroundings.

general director, Sint-Maarten Hospital

IFHE is an international federation for professionals in hospital and healthcare facilities design. The jury applauded the creative architectural solutions, where a very compact building offers a lot of natural light and views, resulting in high-quality spaces for patients and staff alike. Making for an excellent sustainable healing environment.

Jan Ennekens, general manager of AZ Sint-Maarten, shares his appreciation on the hospital – which has been operational for over 2 years now: “With its contemporary architecture and white facades, the building emanates simplicity and tranquillity. The healing character of the building is formed by fresh air, plenty of daylight, well-considered use of colour, view of green roofs and contact with the green surroundings. Together with the integrated artwork, this contributes to a ‘healing environment’ and the well-being of the patient”.

Earlier, the project was awarded for its pioneering use of BIM in a highly demanding and complex environment, and with the IFMA Facility Awards. Three recognitions by peers in various domains, celebrating a successful collaboration between the hospital management and all design and construction partners.

We also gladly mention that one of our experts, Milena Bruyninckx, came in 2nd for the Student Competition Award “Healthcare Engineering – Global Climate Action and Energy Requirements”. Milena presented her research to develop a sustainability assessment tool for hospital buildings from a life cycling thinking perspective. A crucial tool to inform our architects & engineers about our choices and guiding them towards better decision-making for achieving a sustainable hospital building.
