The center of the town of Waregem has undergone a drastic redevelopment. The old senior home, vacant since a new home was built nearby, was replaced by an urban development, offering room for a public library, apartments, retail and an underground car park. This urban intervention is connected to the retail area “Het Pand” through a promenade boulevard.

The site is mostly property of the Public Social Welfare Center of Waregem, and was rebuilt within a public-private collaboration.

The new library is 3 times larger than the current one, integrating a maximum of green techniques. For example, basic lighting is provided through the 4 glazed facades and the northern orientated roof lighting. Climatisation occurs through geothermics and concrete core activation.

The library disposes of a read café and multifunctional space, to be used separately – also after closing time of the library.
