De Oever nursing home

Location Oostnieuwkerke, Belgium
Timeline 2008 - 2014

design and realisation of a new residential care home

Intro

This new nursing home commits to small scale. The functional small-scale living groups are architecturally interpreted by the alternation of tight white volumes and warm brick components. These enclose a garden with a colourful path and art integration. The garden also serves as an anchor point for the surrounding circulation belts and living spaces, while the rooms offer a maximum view of the surrounding nature and residential area.

Story

A fully glazed multi-functional space at the street-side stimulates the interchange with the community and anchors the senior home in its surroundings.

VK designed nursing home De Oever with an attention for functionality and flexibility, focussed on small scale.

Taking the residential surroundings into account, VK opted for a series of volumes around a patio, and for 3 building layers. This concept integrates perfectly with the surrounding community. The use of various facade materials enhances the small-scale impression. The bed wings and entrance are clad in a sobre brown brick. The contrast with the white plastering of the communal blocks creates a fresh and vivid entity. Wooden elements in the patio and by the entrance bring a warm and inviting character to the senior home.

Functionally, the small scale is reflected in the living groups, with 7 to 8 persons each, with living rooms at both ends of the patio. The relationship between the inside and outside area continues in the fully glazed corridors. This not only helps orientation, but also introduces abundant and pleasant daylight into the corridors. Some color accents heighten the liveliness. The rooms are positioned in the outer part of the bed wings, looking out on the green surroundings.

The entrance is orientated towards the street, with a fully glazed multi-functional space. The interchange with the community this engenders - see and be seen - anchors the senior home in its surroundings.

A number of active and passive measures also take care of energy-efficiency: double insulating high performance glazing, insulation, solar protection, high performance condensing boilers with heating on low temperature and weather regulated, heat recuperation, lighting with motion detection, rain water management and a building management system.
