This senior apartment building seamlessly blends in with a busy street in Ostend. At the same time, the building clearly reveals a distinct identity. The dark brick façade is incised by a white concrete frame, with maximum glazing for the communal living space. At the rear, the residents have their own terraces and a spacious communal terrace, which overlooks a courtyard garden.

The buildings are integrated into their environment, and make a qualitative contribution to the existing street scene.
VK designed and realised 35 senior apartments in the urban centre for the OCMW (Public Centre for Social Welfare) Ostend. The site is a small and irregular space in the centre of the city. It overlooks 2 converging streets. The assisted living residences are distributed over 2 volumes, one in each street. A semipublic garden and a public plateau on the first floor links the two parts of the structure. That area contains a common living area with a cafeteria. Huge windows maximally enlarge the public zone visually. The plateau functions as a meeting place for a wide range of activities. The garden, on the other hand, is a place of calm and quiet.
Despite the 6 structural layers, the design feels small-scale. The myriad siding materials and transparent façade components obscure the massiveness of the structural volumes. At the same time, VK created unity at the chosen site by way of the architecture, form and ambience of the building and modernisation programme. The buildings are integrated into their environment, and make a qualitative contribution to the existing street scene.
