InnovOcean is the new home for the VLIZ, Flemish Institute for the Sea, and the ILVO, Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Research. Both institutions work in a complementary way. InnovOcean, the new marine building for marine research and education for Flanders, stimulates a logical synergy between both institutes. The spacious pedestal is used for meeting rooms, auditorium and labs. The offices, sea library and company canteen are located on the upper floors. This new landmark in Ostend offers space for a total of 200 employees.
Futureproof and cost-optimised
Realized in a Design & Build formula, the design team ensures a sustainable approach, with the highest comfort classes for winter and summer comfort. In addition, the user can influence the comfort him- or herself, by operating interior curtains or opening windows.
With an E-level of E56 and a GRO score of 73% or 'Better', InnovOcean is a sustainable and cost-optimised research building, which allows for the integration of sustainable applications in the future.
The structural engineers designed a clear and simple supporting structure as an open frame, with column-free spaces almost everywhere. In combination with an office grid, this provides optimum flexibility for the future.
In the first instance, passive cooling can be used. Chilled beams supply the remaining demand.
High ambitions have also been set for water consumption. For example, 44% of the office water is fed by rainwater, and 90% of the water collected is used.
Specifics of marine laboratories
Due to the maritime climate, with sea salts, gusts of wind and sand, the choice was made for a robust, low-maintenance building with a facade that is as smooth as possible.
The labs also require a special approach, such as the labs with seawater because of the high corrosion that can accompany them. Furthermore, a separate heating and cooling concept is provided for the seawater labs, given the specific temperature requirements. The seawater labs and the chemical labs will also have a separate air group, because of the specific ventilation requirements, such as dehumidification and the use of appliances.
