engineering for an urban redevelopment with retail, apartments and offices

Intro

A former KBC bank building and adjoining building section were replaced by a multipurpose project, for working, living and shopping. A historically valuable facade had to be integrated into the final result. VK's structural engineers possess the necessary experience for such an intervention. However, the challenge was raised by the fact that a new underground car park had to be constructed underneath the facade to be preserved.

Story

For the underground car park, a construction pit was realised, 10 meters deep, that ran underneath a facade that needed to be preserved.

At the Kouter city square in Ghent, where the former offices of KBC Bank were located, a new building complex was realised for retail, offices and apartments at both sides of a sidestreet of the Kouter square. The underground floors stretch across the sidestreet and serve the two building blocks. The historical most valuable façade was preserved, contrasting with the new façades.

For the underground car park, a construction pit was realised, 10 meters deep, that ran underneath the facade that needed to be preserved. The ground floor and the first underground floor house shops. The KBC Bank still holds an office in the building, with a reduced offices program on the first floor. The apartments on the upper floors are realised around a large inner garden and roof gardens.
