new NZEB police station

Intro

Tournai's new police station lives up to its public function. The austere architecture is realized within the circular idea. The design offers maximum flexibility, with very long-term solutions. The NZEB requirements are amply met by passive measures, in addition to low-technic high-efficiency installations.

Story

The structural solution allows for possible expansions, and in the distant future even for a different interpretation of the building.

The Tournai police urgently needed additional facilities and were considering an extension to the existing building. The winning design team with BAEB, BAG and VK opted for a completely new building.

The design shows a simple and coherent volumetry. The sober and harmonious architecture is easy to read, important for a public building. In addition, the building is compact, reducing energy losses. Spacious glazing and a patio introduce plenty of daylight, while fixed solar protection limits heat gains.

Maximum flexibility

Structurally, a modular grid and skeleton structure in reinforced concrete have been chosen, without load-bearing walls - except for the vertical circulation cores. This provides maximum flexibility, with large open spaces that can be configured freely. This structural solution also allows for possible expansions, and in the distant future even for a different interpretation of the building.

Circularity

The great flexibility fits in with the circular state of mind. In the design a lot of attention has been paid to the reusability and replaceability of individual parts. The facade materials were also considered from this point of view. In addition, SmartCrushing is being envisaged. Concrete granulates and non-hydrated concrete from the demolition can be reused for the new building.

NZEB

Due to its public function, the building must meet NZEB requirements. VK's engineers meet these criteria by reducing energy requirements, using high-performance systems, supplemented by renewable energy.

The compact building with its high-performance envelope is powered by high-efficiency installations, which also recover energy and water. Photovoltaic and thermal solar panels deliver renewable energy. Our engineers opted for simple, low-tech and easy-maintenance installations.
