Along the railway line at Ghent's Sint-Pieters station, a new city neighbourhood is being created. Rinkkaai forms a whole of 6 pavilions with 300 apartments and shops, in a park landscape. VK carried out an in-depth sustainability study. Numerous aspects were investigated, including river heating, integrated PV cells, green facades and the urban heat island effect. As a result, Rinkkaai will become one of the first NZEB neighbourhoods in Ghent.

In the immediate station area, public transport, living, working and relaxing will co-exist and intermingle.
Along the Fabiola Avenue, near the Ghent Saint Peter station, the Ghent city development corporation sogent develops a new town district. The terrain of sogent will mainly contain residences. In a next phase, the site will also house a primary school, creche and local park.
For the first phase, a competition was organised. The Rinkkaai project by the team Alides, Nacarat and Cores Development was proclaimed the laureate. VK Architects & Engineers takes charge of the building services, the sustainability concept and passive design, and energy reporting (EPB).
A dynamic station area
The development of the site along Fabiola Avenue is part of a global development of the Ghent Saint Peter project. In the immediate station area, public transport, living, working and relaxing will co-exist and intermingle. Regarding working, the Virginie Loveling building, completed in 2014 and occupied by the Flemish Government, is also part of the project. VK Architects & Engineers collaborated on the building services and sustainable design of this offices project.
The site between the Fabiola Avenue and the train tracks closest to the sports and recreational park Blaarmeersen will be newly developed. Sogent, owner of the terrain, is responsible for the overall coordination. For the realisation, the city development corporation searched for a private partner. After an architectural competition, the Rinkkaai project by the team Alides, Nacarat and Cores Development has been proclaimed the winner.
Living by the park
The Rinkkaai design includes some 300 new residences, space for local shops and community services. All of these functions will be spread over 6 buildings, including 2 residential towers. The design is based on the pavilion model, as the buildings are located in a green environment that will make a transition between the Blaarmeersen park and the future Rijsenberg park.
The Rinkkaai design is being exhibited in the Lokettenzaal in the Bank of Labor (Bank van de Arbeid, Volderstraat Ghent), where sogent is located. The project comes alive through a model and visualisations.
The exhibition can be visited daily, free of charge, during office hours (Monday to Friday 8h30 am till 12h30 pm and 1h30 till 4h40 pm, Saturday 11 am till 6 pm).
