About

This new office building for the European Commission is the first Net Zero Energy building in Brussels and has been awarded a BREEAM Excellent certificate. Due to its innovative studies, it was awarded the MIPIM Best Innovative Green Building Award in 2016.

Challenge

Building developer AXA set very high energy performance standards for this building, and wanted to obtain at least a passive certificate. VK’s engineers set themselves the challenge of exceeding the client’s request, even though it contains a number of complex elements.

Solution

By developing the energy concept from the very first design stage and basing it on specialised dynamic simulations, the net energy requirements could be optimally determined. The superstructure is clad with solar panels that have been perfectly integrated into the architecture.

The energetic concept was developed from the first design stage onwards, based on specialised dynamic simulations.

Philippe Debelle

senior project engineer M&E, VK architects+engineers

The Treurenberg-project is Brussels first "Net-Zero Energy"-building. VK is in charge of the energy engineering and the building services of this 12,000 sq. m. project.

The energetic concept was developed from the first design stage onwards, based on specialised dynamic simulations. As a result, the net energy needs could be determined under optimal circumstances. The high performance building services consist, amongst others, of cogeneration, perfectly architecturally integrated photovoltaic solar panels, and optimally regulated lighting, ventilation and comfort with regard to the atrium.

All of these applications minimize the energy consumption in order to realise a "Net-Zero Energy Building" and to get a BREEAM "Excellent" assessment.
