VK Engineering in winning design team for new VRT building
As a result of an international architecture competition for the new VRT-building, VK Engineering is most honoured to be part of the winning design team. Robbrecht en Daem architecten, Dierendonckblancke, VK and Arup, in collaboration with Bureau Bas Smets, Muller Van Severen and Grontmij have been selected to design the new media house for the VRT, the Flemish Radio and Television Broadcasting Company.
The project is part of a larger master plan for the site that, besides the broadcasting buildings for the VRT and for the Walloon counterpart RTBF, will also house a park, event square, housing and additional media facilities. The 55,000 m² VRT building will consist of 2 volumes, and function as a connection between the urban tissue and the new park.
VK has been assigned to provide the studies for the technical installations and the structural engineering. This project poses for VK not only a wonderful technical challenge, it also provides a perfect symbiosis between all disciplines that VK offers, such as sustainable design, acoustical engineering, facade engineering and fire safety engineering. This new media building respects the ‘Living Building’ principle, and is to score 4 stars on the sustainability meter of the Flemish government. All measures will result in a passive building with a primary energy consumption that is reduced by 60%, compared to similar buildings. The choice of the implemented technical applications is based on an optimal total cost of ownership.
VK is looking forward to a highly gratifying collaboration with the other design partners for this centre of creativity and culture. The site is to be put into service in 2021.
